Fernandina Beach PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

Hip fracture and GERD. We often write how everything in the body is connected. Here is another example. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often prescribed for many Fernandina Beach reflux sufferers. Unfortunately, these PPIs may trigger issues elsewhere, specifically the hip for which the risk of fracture is increased, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Fernandina Beach chiropractor closely monitors our patients who report hip pain, especially if they are using PPIs, as often chiropractic treatment helps alleviate hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly recommended and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is elevated in PPI users. Whether users take a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those taking a high dose were at even higher risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in recommending PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in knowing what the proper usage of PPIs is so that they don’t take it without a clear indication for such use. (1) Researchers in a recent study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is contestable which set them on a course to see for themselves. They found participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for at least 90 days. They then cross referenced any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed more often in PPI users than in those who didn't use PPI and that fracture risk linked to PPI use increased the more time they were on them. (2) Avoiding hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden described in a recent Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who sought care for spine, hip or shoulder pain reported less pain after 4 months than those who saw a medical doctor…and the cost of care was less! (3,4) Hip pain is a usual complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, especially in patients over 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (especially gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and the like are common approaches to treating and relieving hip pain. Amelia Chiropractic Clinic will set up the right approach to care for your Fernandina Beach hip pain!
